Troubleshooting A Problem Before Calling Our Emergency Plumber

There are some plumbing issues that may initially seem like a crisis or an emergency you can actually take care of temporarily without the help of an emergency plumber.

While we do offer 24/7 service we also understand that you want to save money and have the plumbing job done at a time that is convenient and works in with your schedule. By understanding a few basics you can determine if you can handle the situation until the morning or the next business day or if you would prefer our help immediately.

Leaking Toilets and Taps
Leaking toilets and taps can be problematic if the leak is significant. This is particularly true if the toilet is leaking from the tank or overflowing because of a clog further down the sewer line and you don’t want it to be flushed again.

The first thing to do is to turn off the water to the toilet. There will be a small on/off value located on the line that runs from the wall to the toilet tank. Simply turn this to the off position to prevent further water from going into the tank.

The same is true for a leaking tap. Under the sink you will find an on/off value for the hot and cold water. You may have to turn off one or both depending on the type of taps that you have installed.

Sewer Backups or Water Line Leaks
Sewer line backups or stoppages are particularly problematic as the water is dirty and poses a very real risk of contamination. In this case it is important to immediately call an emergency plumber as there is little you can do on your own.

Avoid using a plunger or trying to run a snake through the system on your own, it is our experience that this typically creates more of a problem and can push the obstruction further down the line.

For water lines coming into the home that break or are leaking, turn off the main water valve to the home. This works, of course, only if the leak is on the house side of the valve.

If you think you need an emergency plumber but aren’t sure, you can always give us a call. We can talk you through the options or simply come to your home or business and correct the problem so you don’t have to worry.
